Pseudostrabismus

What is pseudostrabismus?

Pseudostrabismus is a false appearance of eye misalignment or strabismus. Most often the eye(s) have the false appearance of turning inward.

Why do some baby's eyes look crossed?

The skin fold at the inner corner of some baby's eyelids is broad and round in contour. In addition, babies often have a broad flat nasal bridge. Both of these features contribute to making the baby's eyes look crossed because there is less space between the colored part of the eye (the iris) and the inner corner of the eyelid. Observers of the baby will often think that because there is not much white eyeball showing between the iris and the inner corner of the eyelid, that the eye is turned in.
